纯氧燃烧有助于提高废气中的 CO2 浓度，从而有效降低捕获成本。但是，废气中仍然含有其他一些传统的燃烧产物：水蒸气、氧气、氮气（量已减少）、氩气、酸性气体（SO3、SO2、HCl 和 NOx 等）。为了预防腐蚀并符合封存可能需要的要求，在将 CO2 流送入管线前，首先必须除去其中的的酸性杂质。对气体纯度可能还有一些其他的严格要求，尤其是在提高原油采收率 (EOR) 等应用中。
